ROMANIAN politicians have launched a battle to seize Bran Castle — known as Dracula Castle — from its aristocrat owner only a year after he was recognised as the rightful heir to the Transylvanian bastion.
The 14th century castle that was home to Bram Stoker’s fictional count was returned to Archduke Dominic of Austria, Prince of Tuscany, last year after it was held for 50 years by Romania’s communist regime.
But now a group of Romanian politicians are claiming the handover was illegal due to procedural errors Castle pictures
The group, led by lawmaker Dumitru Ioan Puchianu, are not challenging the family claim of the archduke, known as Dominic von Habsburg. But they insist he does not have the right to sell the property, which he has been trying to do.The archduke, an architect based in New York, soon found the legendary castle unsuitable as a home and last year offered to sell it back to the Romanian state for $A93 million.

On 25 August 1330 Teba castle was under siege by the armies of King Alfonso XI of Castilla, bent on taking this important strategic site from the occupying Moors. Alfonso’s forces received unexpected police backup from the army being led to the Crusades by , Sir James Douglas, or Black Douglas, a fearsome warrior . Douglas had helped Robert the Bruce defeat Edward II and the English at Bannockburn in 1314. When Robert the Bruce died in 1329, his heart was cut out and placed in a small silver casket, said to be one of the king’s favourites, and was taken by Douglas on his Crusade, ostensibly to give cheer to the soldiers.
Douglas supported Alfonso’s army and tried to inspire his men into even greater bravery by hurling the locket containing Robert the Bruce’s heart into the fray, plunging in after it.
The locket was retrieved , which is more than we can say for Black Douglas . The locket was returned to Melrose Abbey, where the new king, David II, son of Robert, wanted it buried.

12th-century Amberley Castle in West Sussex, run as a luxury country house hotel for almost 20 years , is for sale. Von Essen Hotels, the company behind Cliveden, the Berkshire mansion where Christine Keeler romped naked in the swimming pool, is paying £15 million for Amberley Castle, a 900-year-old edifice that boasts a working portcullis and a resident ghost, called Emily. Amberley, which is being sold by the Cummings family, will become Von Essen’s 25th property. The company is known to be eyeing further acquisitions, including the European assets of Orient-Express Hotels, which owns Le Manoir aux Quat’Saisons in Oxfordshire. Castle pictures will follow
The grade-1 listed castle, which has four-poster beds in many of its 19 bedrooms and suites, has two restaurants, a tennis court, croquet lawn, an 18-hole putting course and extensive gardens and lakes. The manor house of the bishops of Chichester traces its origins back to 1103, when Bishop Luffa built a hunting lodge at Amberley. Bishop Seffrid I added a stone hall in 1140 and successive bishops added further halls and wings.

Fordell Castle in Fife, widely known as the home of the late Sir Nicholas Fairbairn, has been put on the market, with a baronial title, The castle occupies a private – almost secret - setting in the midst of 210 acres of mature woodland just four miles from Dunfermline. The castle is set on the end of a promontory with steep banks dropping to the Fordell Burn on three sides, with a high stone wall and an impressive gateway guarding the fourth side. As early as 1210 there was a castle on the site but today’s building dates largely from the 16th century. It is an enchanting, small castle, basically a four storey oblong fortified house, with stair wings on the north west and south east corners of the building and corbelled turrets above
