Eilean Donan Castle

Eilean Donan Castle is the stunning Highlands castle set on an island in the middle of three lochs. The castle is the most photographed castle in the UK and it featured in the films Highlander and James Bond . Your tour guide will take you to the three best locations for pictures of the castle .

Eilean Donan means Island of Donan (a religious figure from the 12th century). Eilean Donan was Clan MacKenzie’s most important stronghold from the 13th Century until it was destroyed in 1719. Robert the Bruce was given refuge in Eilean Donan Castle by John MacKenzie, Second of Kintail when he was being hunted by the English at the beginning of the fourteenth century.

In 1719 three English frigates sailed into Loch Duich and bombarded the castle with cannon fire until it was in ruins. The castle them lay in ruins for nearly 200 years. In 1911 John MacRae-Gilstrap bought the castle and spent 20 years restoring it .

Glencoe

Glencoe – see the stunning scenery of the paps of Glencoe , one of the most impressive peaks in Scotland. Glencoe is a beautiful rocky landscape featuring the Paps of Glencoe – giant mountains of solid rock. In the summer you might hear the piper in the car park playing a lament . When it goes quiet the silence is quite eery . Listen carefully and you might hear the wailing of ghosts from the Massacre of Glencoe. Your guide will take to the two best viewing points in Glencoe . One of the viewing points involves a short walk up the hillside facing the paps of Glencoe .

Black Mount is a range of mountains stretching from Glen Orchy to Glen Coe, beside Rannoch Moor. The range features two Munros (Scottish mountains over 3000ft) and Lochan na h-Achlaise , a small loch in front of the mountains .

Doune Castle Game of Thrones tours

The castle was used as the set for Winterfell in the TV series Game of Thrones (2011–present), an adaptation of the A Song of Ice and Fire series of novels by George R. R. Martin.

Game of Thrones filming took place in the courtyard and the Great Hall of Doune Castle . Doune is one of the best preserved medieval castles in Scotland.

The Great Hall is 20 metres by 8 metres , and 12 metres high to its timber roof, again a 19th-century replacement. The hall has no fireplace, and was presumably heated by a central fire, and ventilated by means of a louvre like the one in the modern roof. No details of the original roof construction are known, however, and the restoration is conjectural.Large windows light the hall, and stairs lead down to the three cellars on ground level.

The hall is accessed from the courtyard via a stair up to a triangular lobby, which in turn links the hall and kitchens by means of two large serving hatches with elliptical arches, unusual for this period. The kitchen tower, virtually a tower house in its own right, is 17 metres (56 ft) by 8 metres (26 ft). The vaulted kitchen is on the hall level, above a cellar. One of the best-appointed castle kitchens in Scotland of its date, it has an oven and a 5.5-metre (18 ft) wide fireplace. A stair turret, added in 1581 and possibly replacing a timber stair, leads up from the lobby to two storeys of guest rooms. These include the “Royal Apartments”, a suite of two bedrooms plus an audience chamber, suitable for royal visitors.

Doune Castle has featured in several literary works, including the 17th-century ballad, “The Bonny Earl of Murray”, which relates the murder of James Stewart, 2nd Earl of Moray, by the Earl of Huntly, in 1592. In Sir Walter Scott’s first novel, Waverley (1814), the protagonist Edward Waverley is brought to Doune Castle by the Jacobites. Scott’s romantic novel describes the “gloomy yet picturesque structure”, with its “half-ruined turrets”.

The castle was used as a location in MGM’s 1952 historical film Ivanhoe which featured Robert Taylor and Elizabeth Taylor. The BBC adaptation of “Ivanhoe” in 1996 also featured Doune as a location. The castle was used as a stand-in for the fictional “Leoch Castle” in the TV adaption of the Outlander series of novels.

Royal couple holiday on exclusive island in the Seychelles

Last month’s Royal wedding dominated the world’s media in  way that only a Royal romance can . Now newly marrieds the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge are honeymooning in the Seychelles. Despite attempts by the Palace to keep it secret , news has come out that Princess Diana’s son  Prince William and Kate are in the Seychelles . They spent a week in the Indian Ocean archipelago, on the island of Desroches, in August 2007. William is reported to have told islanders that the trip was the best holiday he had had. Desroches is the main island of the Amirantes group, an exclusive setting well beyond the reach of most honeymoon couples. The archipelago boasts 115 islands. This might show William and Kate’s relationship is on a more equal footing than his parents’. Charles and Diana’s post-wedding travels in 1981 – Broadlands in Hampshire, family home of the Mountbattens, followed by a Mediterranean cruise on the royal yacht, then on to Balmoral with his family – smacked of a husband calling the shots. Whether the Amirantes will be such an aphrodisiac is another question. William was born in 1982, eight months after the couple returned.

Homage to Damien Hirst – Butterfly Man prints by Sir Peter Blake

Sir Peter Blake has published a new set of prints, Homage to Damien Hirst – Butterfly Man.
According to the Blake : ‘Damien Hirst has used butterflies in a lot in his work, and it was pointed out that ‘the butterfly man’ owes more than a little to his work, so I was happy to dedicate him in homage to Damien. I am an enormous admirer of Damien’s work.’
The new works use vintage postcard images as backdrops to his collage of the butterfly man, dozens of butterflies and an assortment of eclectic characters from the miscellaneous print paraphernalia that Blake has hoarded over the years.

The Butterfly Man, Hollywood captures the golden age of Hollywood glamour with  the Hollywood hills and  mini-mansions. In the foreground along with the butterfly man are numerous Hollywood legends including Charlie Chaplin, James Dean, Laurel & Hardy, Errol Flynn, Elvis, Marilyn and Judy Garland.

Blake returns to home ground for Butterfly Man, Eastbourne, celebrating the glory of the British seaside holiday. The butterfly man orchestrates his pets in front of the statue of Saigo Takamori (famous samurai) in The Butterfly Man, Tokyo, along with Japanese ladies in kimonos and visitors such as African tribesmen and a European lady in formal costume. The butterfly man also travels to North Africa, where he releases his butterflies in the souk at Tunis and finally, he goes to Venice and the piazza San Marco.

Each print is a silkscreen in 24 colours and 2 glazes on paper measuring 32.5 x 29.5 inches, from a signed edition of 100. 75 from the edition are being released as a boxed set priced at £7,500, and the remaining 25 prints are available individually at £1,800 each. The Hollywood and Venice images might sell out pretty quickly, so  interested buyers should  move fairly quickly.
